The basis for the Ghost Dance is the circle dance, a traditional Native American dance which involves moving in a circular formation in large groups. Musser, this film and others shot on the same day (see also Sioux ghost dance) featured Native American Indian dancers from Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, and constitutes the American Indian's first appearance before a motion picture camera. Filmed September 24, 1894, in Edison's Black Maria studio.
Wovoka was born in the Smith Valley area southeast of Carson City, Nevada around 1856. Quoitze Ow was his birth name.
