Shepherd & Woodward are a traditional clothing outfitters in High Street, Oxford, England. In particular, they provide academic gowns and other clothing for the University of Oxford. The shop's origins date back to 1845. The company also runs Walters of Oxford in Turl Street and the Varsity Shop, Castells & Son, in Broad Street.
The store was ceremonially opened on 18 October 1957 by the Mayor and Mayoress of Oxford; the former complimented the building. The branch was five times larger than its predecessor [ 4 ] —indeed, when it opened, it was the biggest in Europe [ 12 ] —and contained a deluxe cafeteria, offices, a roof garden and a multi-storey car park.
The street was then named Queen Street after Queen Charlotte, who visited Oxford with her husband, King George III, in 1785. There were many gabled and timber-framed buildings here until the late 19th century. Until 1932, there was a showroom for Morris Garages in the street. In 1970, the street was pedestrianised.
