Hollies is the 14th UK studio album by the English pop rock group the Hollies, released in 1974, marking the return of Allan Clarke after he had left for a solo career. It features the band's cover of Albert Hammond's ballad "The Air That I Breathe," a major worldwide hit that year.
Although the album is clearly a US repackaging of the Hollies album, the cover uses the photo from the UK In The Hollies Style LP, which was never released in the USA. "Mickey's Monkey" later appeared in 1966 on the forthcoming " Bus Stop " album, but "Fortune Teller" was never issued in the US until the 1990s.
The cover shown is the US/Canadian cover, which used the same Karl Ferris photograph but differed from the UK cover by dispensing with The Fool's overall cover design. Instead, the US/Canadian cover put the Hollies' name on the cover in different lettering, placed the album title on the cover, and then overlaid a paisley-patterned image.
The album's biggest hit was the song "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress", composed by Allan Clarke and Roger Cook (whose co-writer Roger Greenaway was also credited by verbal agreement between the two songwriters). It was lifted from the band's Parlophone debut album, Stay with the Hollies, released on 1 January 1964, which went to No. 2 on the UK album chart. The Space-themed sleeve design was fashioned by Jack Wood (who made artwork for Status Quo, Thin Lizzy or The Sensational Alex Harvey Band).LP was issued by Polydor in the UK in March 1979, but the album was overshadowed by the success of the compilation, The Hollies: 20 Golden Greats, which reached No. 2 in the UK Albums Chart shortly before.
The US Epic Records version of the album, which reached number 84 on the Billboard 200, omitted the track "Lizzy and the Rainman", and has a slightly altered side one track order. The album failed to chart in the UK. The cover of Romany is a rendering of the summer location depicted on Distant Light as a winter scene.
