Jahanara was an ardent partisan of her brother, Dara Shikoh, and supported him as her father's chosen successor. During the war of succession which took place after Shah Jahan's illness in 1657, Jahanara sided with the heir-apparent Dara and joined her father in Agra Fort , where he had been placed under house arrest by Aurangzeb.
His mother was a Mughal princess and daughter of Parviz Mirza (son of Jahangir) and his first consort Jahan Begum. He was also the first grandchild of the then 43 year-old emperor, Shah Jahan. His paternal aunts included Jahanara Begum, Roshanara Begum and Gauharara Begum. His paternal uncles were Shah Shuja, Murad Bakhsh and Aurangzeb.

During the life time of his mother Mumtaz Mahal, Dara Shikoh was betrothed to his half-cousin, Princess Nadira Banu Begum, the daughter of his paternal uncle Sultan Parvez Mirza. [22]

Mumtaz Mahal was born as Arjumand Banu on 27 April 1593 [21] in Agra to Abu'l-Hasan Asaf Khan [14] and his wife Diwanji Begum, the daughter of a Persian noble, Khwaja Ghias-ud-din of Qazvin. [22] Asaf Khan was a wealthy Persian noble who held high office in the Mughal Empire.
He was born to a Qazi in the village of Araska in the Rustaq area of Badakhshan (modern day Afghanistan) from which also his name is derived from. [1] He belonged to the Qadiri order of Sufism .
