Both chimpanzees and bonobos are some of the most social great apes, with social bonds occurring throughout large communities. Fruit is the most important component of a chimpanzee's diet; but they will also eat vegetation, bark, honey, insects and even other chimpanzees or monkeys. They can live over 30 years in both the wild and captivity.
Formerly the bonobo was known as the "pygmy chimpanzee", despite the bonobo having a similar body size to the common chimpanzee. The name "pygmy" was given by the German zoologist Ernst Schwarz in 1929, who classified the species on the basis of a previously mislabeled bonobo cranium, noting its diminutive size compared to chimpanzee skulls.
They comprise two extant genera: Homo and Pan (chimpanzees and bonobos), and in standard usage exclude the genus Gorilla , which is grouped separately within the subfamily Homininae. The term Hominini was originally introduced by Camille Arambourg (1948), who combined the categories of Hominina and Simiina pursuant to Gray 's classifications ...
Bonobos (Pan paniscus) are social animals that live in hierarchical structures, though not as hierarchical as chimpanzees. [115] Researchers Bräuer, Call, and Tomasello tested bonobos, together with other great apes , twice and twice failed to find evidence of inequity aversion.
The split between the common ancestors of the chimpanzee and bonobos then took place about 1.5 to 2 million years ago with the two lineages giving rise to the two current extant species. In the past, bonobos were incorrectly relegated to subspecies status within the species chimpanzee. It is now understood that bonobos are an entirely different ...
It’s been just over two years since Tonka arrived at Save the Chimps, a 150-acre parcel of protected land where 222 apes born in captivity have come to live out their retirement.
The Hominidae (/ h ɒ ˈ m ɪ n ɪ d iː /), whose members are known as the great apes [note 1] or hominids (/ ˈ h ɒ m ɪ n ɪ d z /), are a taxonomic family of primates that includes eight extant species in four genera: Pongo (the Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli orangutan); Gorilla (the eastern and western gorilla); Pan (the chimpanzee and the bonobo); and Homo, of which only modern humans ...
