The De Vargas Street House is a two-story adobe building; the first floor is original and the second floor was reconstructed based on the original in the 1920s. Most of the house is constructed from adobe brick, which was a Spanish colonial technology, while a few lower wall sections are puddled adobe characteristic of pre-Spanish pueblo buildings.
It had a central square courtyard surrounded by a two-story gallery, from which rooms opened on every side on both stories. The rooms were wide but not very deep, so as to preserve the overall square floor plan of the building with the courtyard at its center. The main rooms opened through tall arched doorways with wooden double doors.
After a 1971 fire damaged the building on which the Wall of Respect was painted, the entire structure was torn down and the mural thus destroyed. [11] One of the few remaining pieces of The Wall is a smaller panel that consisted of an affixed photograph of Amiri Baraka by Darryl Cowherd, such panels were interspersed among the larger paintings.
