Near the center of the north side is a bronze plaque inscribed with "Danville National Cemetery" and the seal of the Veterans Administration (now the Department of Veterans Affairs). A square limestone post, with the letters "U.S." inscribed on the upper face, is situated at each corner of the national cemetery.
Danville National Cemetery was established by the federal government on August 14, 1867 on a plot of 2.6 acres (1.1 ha). This was part of the process to recognize and commemorate the military dead. Almost all of the original interments were Union prisoners-of-war who had been held in the city of Danville.
