In the 20th century, the main facility was located at 1001 West 10th Street and went through several name changes, including: Indianapolis General Hospital (1947); Marion County General Hospital (1959); and Wishard Memorial Hospital (1975). [2] The Wishard name was selected to honor Dr. William N. Wishard, a leading physician in Indianapolis.
Riley Hospital for Children is named for James Whitcomb Riley, a writer and poet who lived in Indianapolis. In 1916, a group of prominent citizens from Indianapolis, who knew Riley, started the Riley Memorial Association (later called Riley Children's Foundation) to build a children's hospital in memory of Riley. The hospital opened in 1924.
In 1975, the Radiology Department introduced Ultrasound Laminography to the facility. In 1991, St. Francis purchased 106 acres (43 ha) near the southeast corner of Emerson Avenue and Stop 11 Road in Franklin Township for the purposes of expansion. Construction began in May 1992 and a new hospital opened on the South Campus in 1995.
