The main part of the summer camp at Dome C (Concordia) Station in January 2005. Concordia Research Station, which opened in 2005, is a French–Italian research facility that was built 3,233 m (10,607 ft) above sea level at a location called Dome C on the Antarctic Plateau, Antarctica.
Dome C is located on the Antarctic Plateau, 1,100 kilometres (680 mi) inland from the French research station at Dumont D'Urville, 1,100 kilometres (680 mi) inland from the Australian Casey Station and 1,200 kilometres (750 mi) inland from the Italian Zucchelli station at Terra Nova Bay. Russia's Vostok Station is 560 kilometres (350 mi) away.
The United States maintains the southernmost base, Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, and the largest base and research station in Antarctica, McMurdo Station. The second-southernmost base is the Chinese Kunlun Station at 80°25′2″S during the summer season, and the Russian Vostok Station at 78°27′50″S during the winter season.
The European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) is a multinational European project for deep ice core drilling in Antarctica. Its main objective is to obtain full documentation of the climatic and atmospheric record archived in Antarctic ice by drilling and analyzing two ice cores and comparing these with their Greenland counterparts ...
The South Pole Traverse, also called the South Pole Overland Traverse (SPoT), [2] or McMurdo–South Pole Highway [3] is an approximately 995-mile-long (1,601 km) flagged route over compacted snow and ice [4] in Antarctica that links McMurdo Station on the coast to the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station, both operated by the National Science Foundation of the United States. Many research stations in Antarctica support satellite field camps which are, in general, seasonal camps. The type of field camp can vary – some are permanent structures used during the annual Antarctic summer, whereas others are little more than tents used to support short term activities.
Concordia Subglacial Lake is a subglacial lake located beneath an ice sheet 3,850 m (12,630 ft) to 4,125 m (13,533 ft) thick. It has a surface of about 800 km 2 (310 sq mi) and is ~ 300 m (980 ft) deep. The sloped surface of the water has an elevation from 623 m (2,044 ft) to 898 m (2,946 ft) below mean sea level.
Orbcomm satellites which pass over Antarctica can relay short messages to and from transceiver units to email or XML over HTTP. The McMurdo station has permanent access to a shared 17 Mbps connection; testing of the Starlink service began in September 2022, [ 5 ] with a second terminal providing connectivity for the Allan Hills field camp ...
