The main campus of MKU is located in Thika, approximately 47 kilometres (29 mi) by road northeast of Nairobi, the capital and largest city in Kenya. The university was founded in 2010 by Simon Gicharu, a former teacher, as a campus of Mount Kenya University. [1] It was renamed as Mount Kigali University in 2023 after receiving a Charter [2] from the Higher Education Council of Rwanda. The university is named after Mount Kigali, a 1,853 metres (6,079 ft) hill in the west of Kigali city.

After a donation by Mr. Ng Ping Kin, an architect and Urban Councillor, the school was renamed Ng Wah College in commemoration of his father, Mr. Ng Wah (Chinese: 伍華). In the late 1970s, the rooftop of the secondary school building was modified and became the 6th floor to accommodate the then expanding student population.
