A lunar rover or Moon rover is a space exploration vehicle designed to move across the surface of the Moon. The Apollo program 's Lunar Roving Vehicle was driven on the Moon by members of three American crews, Apollo 15 , 16 , and 17 .
The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) is a battery-powered four-wheeled rover used on the Moon in the last three missions of the American Apollo program (15, 16, and 17) during 1971 and 1972.
Yutu-2 is currently operational as the longest-lived lunar rover [8] after it eclipsed (on 20 November 2019) the previous lunar longevity record of 321 Earth days held by Soviet Union's Lunokhod 1 rover. Yutu-2 is the first lunar rover ever to have traversed the far side of the Moon. By January 2022, it had travelled a distance of more than ...
The rover was successfully deployed from the lander and made contact with the lunar surface on 20:35 UTC, 14 December 2013. [33] On 17 December 2013, it was announced that all of the scientific instruments except the spectrometers were successfully activated, with both the lander and rover "functioning as hoped, despite the unexpectedly ...

The Lunokhod 2 lunar rover. The Lunokhod 2 was the second of two uncrewed lunar rovers landed on the Moon by the Soviet Union as part of the Lunokhod program. The rover became operational on the Moon on January 16, 1973. [7] It was the second roving remote-controlled robot to land on any celestial body.
During its first full lunar day, the rover travelled 120 m (390 ft), and on 11 February 2019 it powered down for its second lunar night. [83] [84] In May 2019, it was reported that Chang'e 4 has identified what appear to be mantle rocks on the surface, its primary objective. [85] [86] [87]
It had a special vehicle design to be able to move on the special surface conditions of the Moon. Their frames were made of aluminum alloy. (See more details: Lunar rover.) In 1971, the Apollo 15 carried the first Lunar rover to the Moon. In 1972 the Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 also carried Lunar rovers. All three vehicles remained on the Moon.
