The tenth tropical low and third tropical cyclone of the 2020–21 Australian region cyclone season , Kimi originated from a weak tropical low which formed northeast of Queensland on 16 January.

The initial cyclone warning was issued on the morning of 30 January, stretching between Cape Flattery and Townsville, while the previous cyclone watch was expanded to cover areas from Lockhart River to St Lawrence. The warning was later extended to reach Cooktown and Bowen, and was further lengthened to span regions from Cairns to St Lawrence.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology reported that the Category 5 cyclone was on a trajectory to impact the Pilbara region, with Port Hedland, a major mining and resource hub, directly in its path.
