DXVK was first developed by Philip Rebohle to support Direct3D 11 games only [13] as a result of poor compatibility and low performance of Wine's Direct3D 11 to OpenGL translation layer. In 2018, the developer was sponsored by Valve to work on the project full-time in order to advance compatibility of the Linux version of Steam with Windows games.
Proton incorporates several libraries that improve 3D performance. These include Direct3D-to-Vulkan translation layers, namely DXVK for Direct3D 9, 10 and 11, and VKD3D-Proton for Direct3D 12. A separate library known as D9VK handled Direct3D 9 support until it was merged into DXVK in December 2019. [6]
Another implementation, DXVK, translates Direct3D 8, 9, 10, and 11 calls using Vulkan as well and is a separate project. [38] Wine, when patched, can alternatively run Direct3D 9 API commands directly via a free and open-source Gallium3D State Tracker (aka Gallium3D GPU driver) without translation into OpenGL API calls.
Vulkan targets high-performance real-time 3D-graphics applications, such as video games and interactive media, and highly parallelized computing.Vulkan is intended to offer higher performance and more efficient CPU and GPU usage compared to the older OpenGL and Direct3D 11 APIs.
D9VK – An obsolete fork of DXVK for adding Direct3D 9 support, [174] included with Steam/Proton on Linux. [175] On December 16, 2019 D9VK was merged into DXVK. [176] D8VK – An obsolete fork of DXVK for adding Direct3D 8 support on Linux. [177] It was merged with DXVK version 2.4 which was released on July 10, 2024.
