Ascaron Entertainment was a video game developer based in Germany. Founded as Ascon by Holger Flöttmann in 1991 and later renamed in October 1996 due to the possible confusion with the Swiss company Ascom AG , [ 1 ] the company produced titles primarily for the PC until it became insolvent in 2009.
The game was created by Ascaron Entertainment in 2002. The sequel Port Royale 2 was released over a year after in September 2004.. On August 2, 2011 the publisher Kalypso Media who purchased many of the licenses and assets from Ascaron Entertainment during its insolvency, announced that they had acquired the licences of the Port Royale installment.
The Patrician was a commercial success. [2] By 2000, its sales at full price had totaled roughly 250,000 units. [3]A Computer Gaming World reviewer in 1993 criticized the identical cities, "simplistic" combat, and "mundane" trading, stating that "the long term appeal of this game, except to bank managers and chartered accountants, is therefore questionable".

Ascaron, the original publisher of the Patrician series, filed for bankruptcy in June 2009 and Kalypso Media bought Patrician along with a number of other properties in a sale. [6] Kalypso also formed Gaming Minds Studios with ex-Ascaron video game developers, including employees who had previously worked on the Patrician series. [ 6 ]
