The town of Denbigh was the county seat of Warwick County from 1810 until 1952, except for a short period from 1888 to 1896 when the courthouse was located in what is now downtown Newport News. It was moved back to Denbigh when Newport News became an independent city in 1896. Warwick County became an independent city itself in 1952.
The council is based at County Hall in Ruthin. The building was originally built in 1909 for the old Denbighshire County Council. Between 1974 and 1996 the building served as the headquarters of Glyndŵr District Council.
Warwick County recorded 1,690 persons in the federal census of 1790, making it the third smallest county population-wise in Virginia. In 1809, Warwick Towne was abandoned, and the county seat was moved to the area of Denbigh, near Stoney Run. In the spring of 1637 Mathews was sent home to England to stand trial for treason in the Court of Star Chamber along with John West (governor), John Utie, and William Peirce (burgess), but the charges were eventually dropped and Mathews returned to Virginia in 1639. The Pierce Memorial Garden is an urban park in the town of Denbigh, in Denbighshire, Wales. It was constructed between 1874 and 1887 and commemorates Evan Pierce who donated the land. Pierce, a doctor, sat on Denbigh Town Council for 50 years and served five terms of office as mayor .
