The Chicago Black Hawks were moved to the West Division, and the Oakland Seals were renamed the California Golden Seals .

In the U.S., the league's deal with CBS to air Sunday afternoon regular-season games and playoff games expired at the end of the 1971–72 season. NBC then aired those games in the same slot from 1972–73 to 1974–75.
