Emporia is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, surrounded by Greensville County, United States. Emporia and a predecessor town have been the county seat of Greensville County since 1791. A Business Route of US 58 exists within Emporia. US 301, the principal south–north route Greensville County and Emporia until it was supplanted by I-95. A spur of US Route 1, it enters Greensville County from North Carolina, serves as a major boulevard in Historic Emporia, and leaves at Sussex County south of Jarratt.
Greensville houses the Commonwealth of Virginia execution chamber, which has been obsolete since the abolition of capital punishment in 2021. [ 7 ] [ 8 ] The largest employer in Jarratt was a Boar's Head plant that closed in September 2024 following a listeria outbreak that killed seven people who consumed deli meat produced there.
