The Ingoldsby land was part of the early patent held by Capt. John Evans. For a time Edmonston's log cabin was the only house between New Windsor and what would later become Washingtonville. [1] The family lived in the log cabin until 1755 when the first 2-story stone house was built, followed soon after with a 2-story stone addition.
The house and its grounds were the setting and subject of the children's haunted-house novel Buried Treasure: A Tale of an Old House (1919), by the best-selling children's author Henry Everett McNeil. The book is illustrated with McNeil's own photographs (made circa 1911 or 1912) of the various buildings and bridge at the Knox site.
The house sits on the former farm of patriot Robert Boyd, Jr. (1734 — 1804). In June 1775, Boyd built a water-powered forge on the south side of the nearby Vale of Avoca. He was a Scottish immigrant to New Windsor [4] before the Revolutionary War, and with his father, Robert Boyd, Sr. (1703 — 1786), continued their trade as blacksmiths. [5]

The Lefferts Historic House is located within Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York City. Built circa 1783, it is the former home of enslaved persons and the family of Continental Army Lieutenant Pieter Lefferts. It currently operates as a museum of the Leffertses' family life in Kings County. [1]
