USS Gearing (DD-710) was the lead ship of her class of destroyers in the United States Navy.She was named for three generations of the Gearing family, Commander Henry Chalfant Gearing Sr., Captain Henry Chalfant Gearing Jr. and Lieutenant Henry Chalfant Gearing, III.
The Gearing class was a series of 98 destroyers built for the U.S. Navy during and shortly after World War II.The Gearing design was a minor modification of the Allen M. Sumner class, whereby the hull was lengthened by 14 ft (4.3 m) at amidships, which resulted in more fuel storage space and increased the operating range.
Following a month's instruction at the Fleet Sonar School in Key West, Florida, he commanded the destroyer Gearing (DD-710) from December 1948 until July 1950, when he entered the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Upon completion of the logistics course in June 1951, he remained for two years as a member of the Strategy and Tactics Staff.

Clark served aboard the destroyers USS John W. Weeks (DD-701) and USS Gearing (DD-710). As a lieutenant, he commanded USS Grand Rapids (PG-98) . He subsequently commanded USS McCloy (FF-1038) , USS Spruance (DD-963) , the Atlantic Fleet's Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center, Destroyer Squadron 17, and Destroyer Squadron 5.
