Todds Tavern was the focal point of a cavalry battle on 7–8 May 1864, between the battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House during the American Civil War. [1] The tavern location on Brock Road carried the name of Charles Todd who died about 1850.

The Brockroad area was the location of many battles fought during the American Civil War, including the battles of Battle of Chancellorsville and The Wilderness. Brock Road Station on the Potomac, Fredericksburg and Piedmont Railroad was situated on Brock Road at latitude 38°16′28″ north and longitude 77° 40′ 45″ west.

On May 4, 1864, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's 122,000-man Army of the Potomac and Gen. Robert E. Lee's 66,000-man Army of Northern Virginia opened the Battle of the Wilderness as a meeting engagement.
