During the 1970s, Sarajevo was undergoing a rapid economic and cultural development, with great expansion focused on population and industry.Novi Grad was a direct result of this period of heavy growth, in which many acres of previously unused land were transformed into socialist urban centres filled with apartment buildings.

The city now consists of the following six municipalities: Srpska Ilidža (name replaced by "Kasindo" in 2004), Srpsko Novo Sarajevo (name replaced by "Lukavica" in 2004), Pale, Sokolac, Srpski Stari Grad (name replaced by "Istočni Stari Grad" in 2004), and Trnovo. In 1996, the name "Serb City of Sarajevo" was changed to "City of Srpsko Sarajevo".

According to the 2013 population census, the overall population of Sarajevo Canton is 413.593. 84% of population are ethnic Bosniaks, 4,2% Croats, and 3,2% Serbs.
