In 1986, the first burn unit was started in the country with six beds by country's first plastic surgeon Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shahidullah in Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The number of beds was increased to 50 in 2003 under supervision of Dr. Samanta Lal Sen. [4] Later, bed number was increased to 100.
The medical school was converted to a medical college and named Mitford Medical College in 1962. [7] The next year, governor Abdul Monem Khan renamed it Sir Sallimullah Medical College, after the name of Khwaja Salimullah, Nawab of Dhaka, in recognition of the contribution of the Nawab family to the establishment of the college. [10]
