From its initial sign-on, in 1940, WKPT (AM) broadcast a full-service format of music, news, and play-by-play sports. WKPT promoted itself as "The Nation's Model Station" and was an NBC Radio Network affiliate. WKPT's studios were destroyed by fire in September 1946. Cromwell Radio Group was founded in 1969 when Bayard H. "Bud" Walters (still company president today) applied to the Federal Communications Commission for permit to construct WKCM, a country-formatted AM station in Hawesville, Kentucky. That station, which went on the air in November 1972, is still owned by Cromwell today.

Originally, WPRT was the call sign for the now-defunct 105.5 FM in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, and was the "sister" station to WPRT (960 AM) in Prestonsburg. Today while WPRT still exists, its former "sister" station moved to 105.3 FM and now uses the call sign WXKZ and is owned by Gearheart Communications in Harold, Kentucky, and broadcasts an oldies format.
