One of my general concerns with the current banner and this design is that there is little to indicate to the casual visitor that this is a fundraiser rather than a permanent plea for donations. Right now the donor bar sort of has that effect, but I would support something much more blatant like the text "2007 Wikimedia Fundraiser".
Banner 1 was the top performer in bringing in donations and also brought in some positive comments on this page. Banner 2 was trending behind banner 1, and banner 3 and 4 brought in between 15-25% fewer donations than banner 1. The money for the donation comes from advertisers whose banners are displayed each time a user clicks the button. [1] [2] While not directly contributing (though many sites offer additional ways of support), visitors are making a difference in the sense that, had they not visited, no donation would have been given.
Donation drives can already be seen as an advertising (due to banners and affecting the reading and viewing of an article) and may annoy users more, being begged to give money. If Wikipedia had the ability to fund itself independently, the donations could be going to other charitable organizations incapable of funding themselves.
