Veterans' health care in the United States is separated geographically into 19 regions (numbered 1, 2, 4–10, 12 and 15–23) [1] known as VISNs, or Veterans Integrated Service Networks, into systems within each network headed by medical centers, and hierarchically within each system by division level of care or type.

The hospital is on a 118-acre (48 ha) campus on Old Spanish Trail and Almeda, just on the edge of the Texas Medical Center. It is accredited by the Joint Commission , and has 343 hospital beds, a 40-bed Spinal Cord Injury Center, and a 120-bed transitional care unit for long-term care.
