Pierre Fauchard (French pronunciation: [pjɛʁ foʃaʁ]; 2 January 1679 – 21 March 1761) [1] was a French physician, credited as being the "father of modern dentistry". [2] He is widely known for writing the first complete scientific description of dentistry, Le Chirurgien Dentiste ( "The Surgeon Dentist" ), published in 1728. [ 2 ]
In 1998, he received the Ottofy-Okumura Award from the International College of Dentists. He was awarded a Master Fellowship in the International College of Dentists in 2004. Other awards include the Order of Bernardo O'Higgins and the Pierre Fauchard Academy's gold medal. [8] Richard Shaffer died on 18 July 2012. [2]
