It is traversed by State Highway 9 between the towns of Breckenridge (north) and Fairplay (south). The highway over the pass provides an alternative route from Denver to the ski areas near Breckenridge and Keystone. It is generally open all year round, is traversable by all vehicles in good weather, but is occasionally closed during winter storms.
Although the railroads that previously occupied the Cripple Creek & Victor's route were laid to 4 ft 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge and 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge, the current railroad is laid to a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge. The current railroad started operations on June 28, 1967.

This led to the formation of the Cripple Creek Mining District on April 5, 1891. [1] Better transportation than wagons was urgently needed to access the newly formed mining district. During 1894 a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge line, known as the Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad was built at a cost of $500,000.
