The Georgia Film Academy (GFA) is a not-for-profit entertainment arts program based in Atlanta, Georgia. It is a collaboration of the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia created in 2015 by Georgia state leadership to meet education and workforce needs for high-demand careers in Georgia's film and creative industries.
Digital Film Academy offers 16-month associate degrees in digital filmmaking, as well as one-year-long (12-month) conservatory programs both open to beginner and advanced level students. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] In April 2020, a new branch was opened in the downtown area of Atlanta, Georgia.
In 1967, the school was reorganized as Atlanta Area Technical School and was moved to its current campus, holding the first classes in its new facilities in January 1968. In 1997, the school's name was changed to Atlanta Technical Institute and the institution became part of the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education.
That program grew into the AFI Conservatory, an accredited graduate film school located in the hills above Hollywood, California, providing training in six filmmaking disciplines: cinematography, directing, editing, producing, production design, and screenwriting. The Writing Program was created the same year as Act One, and until 2009 was an intensive one-month course devoted to teaching the rigors of screenwriting; a TV track was added in 2002, allowing a select group of writing students to participate in a mockup of a real TV writer's room.
The School of the Arts' Film Program is well-regarded in the field and offers Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees with concentrations in Screenwriting/Directing and Creative Producing. The program also offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Film Studies. In 2016, the MFA film program accepted 72 students out of approximately 600 applicants. [10]
