The pyramid was built in steps, battlement-wise, as it is called, or, according to others, altar-wise. After laying the stones for the base, they raised the remaining stones to their places by means of machines formed of short wooden planks. The first machine raised them from the ground to the top of the first step.
The ancient Egyptians capped the peaks of their pyramids with gold plated pyramidions and covered their faces with polished white limestone, although many of the stones used for the finishing purpose have fallen or been removed for use on other structures over the millennia.
There is a new study suggesting a fairly complex use of hydraulics during the construction of the step pyramid of Djoser. I'm not sure how relevant it is to this article considering it seems to be a process uniquely used for that pyramid so I'll let editors more familiar with the subject discuss it.
