Until 2021 the council was based at Ebbw Vale Civic Centre, which had been built in the 1960s for the former Ebbw Vale Urban District Council. Davies was born in Ebbw Vale in 1959 and was the son and grandson of steelworkers. He attended Willowtown Secondary Modern School. [2]After leaving school at the age of 16, Davies worked in the electrical department at the Ebbw Vale Steelworks for 26 years; he was a senior trade union shop steward for over 15 years and a member of the Nation Industrial Committee for Steel.
The seat was a county constituency, formed as a division of Monmouthshire. The areas, which comprised the seat, were Ebbw Vale, Rhymney and Tredegar. The division included three Urban District council areas, one named after each town. The boundaries were left unchanged throughout the existence of the Ebbw Vale constituency. [2]
Ebbw Vale South is also an electoral ward, coterminous with the community, [2] which elects two councillors to Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council. A few days after being elected as an Independent councillor for the ward at the 2022 local election, Carl Bainton caused some controversy by changing his allegiance to Labour. [3]
Ebbw Vale is a town at the head of the Ebbw Valley, 2.5 miles (4.0 km) from the south of the Brecon Beacons National Park. [2] As such the town is the northern terminus of services through the valley towards Cardiff, Caerphilly, and Cwmbran, as well as having services to Tredegar and Abergavenny.
