The band achieved mainstream success (receiving a Brit Award for Best British Group ) and are popular within the LGBT community, for whom he has become an icon .

He is one of two vocalists and guitarists of the rock band Ride, and was formerly the bassist of Oasis from 1999 until their breakup in 2009.
