The town's first railway station, Wakefield Kirkgate, opened on the east side of the street in 1840, with the line continuing over a three-arch viaduct over the road. This was replaced by the current single-arch bridge in 1900. In the 20th century, two large cinemas were constructed on the street: the Empire Theatre and the ABC Cinema. [3] [4]

The ABC Cinema was a cinema in Wakefield, West Yorkshire that fell into derelition after its closure. Located in Kirkgate on the corner of Sun Lane, it was designed and built in the Art Deco style for Associated British Cinemas by in-house architect William R. Glen and opened as the Regal Cinema on 9 December 1935.
