The park protects over 11,000 acres (44.5 km²), with 2,000 acres (8 km²) by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and 9,000 acres (36 km²) by the federal Tahoe National Forest. The park is accessed from Highway 20 west of Grass Valley or from Highway 49 north of Nevada City.

The park consists of two lakes, which also act as water recharge basins for ground water. The upper lake has a surface area of 3 acres (12,000 m 2). The lower lake is 2 acres (8,100 m 2) and has become a popular fishing spot. Both lakes are connected by a stream that winds through the park. Four bridges cross the stream.
