The Borough of Wonthaggi was a local government area about 120 kilometres (75 mi) south-southeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia.The borough covered an area of 56.99 square kilometres (22.0 sq mi), and existed from 1911 until 1994.

Miners were also prominent in establishing the local hospital, friendly society dispensary , trade union theatre, and a co-operative store , and in supporting miners in New Zealand in the 1912 Waihi miners' strike .
In 1927 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Wonthaggi. He was briefly Minister of Agriculture and Mines in 1943, and resumed the portfolio from 1945 to 1947. McKenzie was defeated in 1947, and was subsequently a member of the Council of Adult Education; he was also appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire .
