Holt County was created by an act of the Nebraska Territory Legislature in 1862, and was organized in 1876. [4] [5] [6] It is named for Joseph Holt of Kentucky, who was postmaster general and secretary of war under President James Buchanan. It shares its name with Holt County, Missouri, though it is named for a different Holt.
The Rouse Ranch was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. [1]It was deemed significant for its association with the Homestead Act of 1862 and "as one of the last remaining examples of an original homesteaded farm in Holt County, Nebraska, that has remained in the ownership of the original family, and as a prime example of the evolution of farming in the region."
The Holt County Courthouse in O'Neill, Nebraska is a historic building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located on N. 4th St. between E. Clay and Benton Streets. It was built in 1936. [1] The courthouse was deemed significant for its architecture and its historic association with politics and local government.
