The Tennessee Central Railway was founded in 1884 as the Nashville and Knoxville Railroad by Alexander S. Crawford. It was an attempt to open up a rail route from the coal and minerals of East Tennessee to the markets of the midstate, a service which many businessmen felt was not being adequately provided by the existing railroad companies.
1917 map of the railroad. The Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia Railroad was created through a reorganization of the Chattanooga Southern Railway in 1911. A few years later, in 1922, the line's name was changed to the Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia Railway (reporting mark TAG) and was also known as the TAG Route.
The Tennessee Southern Railroad (reporting mark TSRR) began operations in 1988 and currently operates in middle Tennessee and northwestern Alabama. The main line consists of 118 miles (190 km) and the total track has 149 miles (240 km). [1] TSRR is owned by Patriot Rail Corporation. [2]

It operates on a single line between the community of Colesburg near Dickson, Tennessee and Hohenwald. The railroad operates entirely on trackage owned by the publicly-owned South Central Tennessee Railroad Authority and is a division of the West Tennessee Railroad. [1] [2] [3]
