Taking place on an unnamed island, the player character is the Prisoner, an amorphous creature capable of possessing dead bodies located in the depths of the island. While the "head" of the Prisoner is immortal, the bodies it possesses are not, and "dying" will force the Prisoner to return to the Prisoners' Quarters to find another corpse.

Brigadier Bazooka - A grizzly bear who lives in his barracks on Mekanos Island. He is an old war veteran who fought in the Kremean War. His prized possession is a huge cannon named Big Bessie. Blizzard - A polar bear who lives in a base camp at the top of K3 and is best friends with Blue. In the Game Boy Advance remake, he's a grizzly bear.

After his daughter Styla becomes cursed by "The Lady" into wearing a black, simplistic jumpsuit, Tuft launches an operation in which the prophecied Tri Force Heroes must cross the Drablands in a hope to break the curse.
