Rapid City is a city in South Dakota, United States, and the county seat of Pennington County. I-90 was constructed in the 1970s. The four-lane Interstate replaced old US 16 as the main road connecting Rapid City and Sioux Falls. Much of Old US 16 remains intact; however, I-90 has absorbed sections and likewise has reshaped the economies of many southern South Dakota towns. [4]
In Rapid City, US 16 follows Mount Rushmore Road to a concurrency with South Dakota Highway 44 (SD 44; Omaha Street) to the southern terminus of I-190. US 16 stays concurrent with I-190 until both highways end at I-90. This section of US 16 is defined at South Dakota Codified Laws § 31-4-138. [3]
SD 44 begins at a junction with US 385 and heads along a curvy road in a general southeasterly direction through the Black Hills National Forest.It curves to the east and leaves the forest, then bends back to the southeast and clips the northeastern corner of the forest before leaving it permanently and entering Rapid City, where it is known as Jackson Boulevard.
