Spur 1966 was designated on February 23, 2012, as Spur 73, but to avoid confusion, it was changed to Spur 1966 on March 29, 2012. The number was chosen to honor the NCAA championship won by the 1965–66 Texas Western Miners men's basketball team as the road passes the university (now known as The University of Texas at El Paso ).

The original Spur 26 was designated on September 26, 1939, from US 62 (formerly SH 24, now US 62/US 82/SH 114) to Lorenzo as a replacement of SH 24 Spur. [2] On October 14, 1946, the road was extended north 2 miles (3.2 km) to the Lorenzo Cemetery; [ 47 ] the entire route was added to FM 378 but still designated as Spur 26. [ 48 ]
The highway was originally part of US 75 until the "Katy Memorial Freeway" was built to bypass Denison. US 75 was transferred on to its present route and the old route was re-designated as Spur 503 on March 1, 1972. On December 21, 1994, Spur 503 was extended from SH 91 to US 69, replacing part of Business U.S. 75.
The highway has an interchange with Spur 298 (Franklin Avenue), then intersects US 84 (Waco Drive), passing by several commercial and retail areas as it reaches Bosque Boulevard. At Bosque Boulevard, Loop 396 turns southwest onto the road and continues along Bosque Boulevard until ending at an interchange with SH 6 .
