Smithville was laid out in 1851 when the New Albany Railroad was extended to that point. [3] [4] The community was named for George Smith, one of the founders. [5] A post office has been in operation at Smithville since 1854. [6]

The village of Smithville is in the north-central part of the CDP around the intersection of Smithville Road and Strain Ridge Road, while Sanders is 0.5 miles (0.8 km) to the north on Fairfax Road. Most of the CDP consists of rural and semi-suburban land surrounding the two villages.
