Galwegian Gaelic (also known as Gallovidian Gaelic, Gallowegian Gaelic, or Galloway Gaelic) is an extinct dialect of Scottish Gaelic formerly spoken in southwest Scotland. It was spoken by the people of Galloway and Carrick until the early modern period .

In 1872 Scotland moved for the first time to a compulsory, state-directed and state-funded system of education covering the entire country.
Galloway was born in Oakland, California, and received his B.A., C.Phil., and Ph.D. in linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1965, 1971, and 1977, respectively. He conducted linguistic field work with the Haisla language , Upriver Halkomelem (from 1970), and Nooksack (from 1974).
