There are currently more than forty discovered ancient archaeological sites across Assam with numerous sculptural and architectural remains. Moreover, there are examples of several Late-Middle Age art and architectural works including hundreds of sculptures and motifs along with many remaining temples, palaces and other buildings.

Professor Maheswar Neog (7 September 1915 – 13 September 1995) was an Indian academic who specialised in the cultural history of the North East India especially Assam, besides being an Assamese-language scholar and poet.
In 1971-72, the control of the Govt. School of Art & Craft Assam was transferred to the newly created Directorate of Cultural Affairs from the Directorate of Public Instructions. In 1979 twenty bighas of land was allocated to the School of Art, under auspicious endeavors of Sri Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa, when he was the D.C. Kamrup.
