The applicant for an AME licence must be at least 21 years old. Aircraft maintenance engineers must complete a training course at a TC approved training organization (ATO), which are mostly Canadian vocational colleges. There are also accepted distance learning courses.
Up until 1998, Type I and Type II aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) licences were distinguished. In 1998 ICAO replaced these with a single AME licence. [1] In 2005 the relationship between the Canadian AME and the US A&P (AMT) was further revised, through a Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement (BASA) between the US and Canada. [2]
The organization was established in 1936 as the Dominion of Canada Council of Professional Engineers. In the late 1950s, the name became the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (French: Conseil canadien des ingénieurs). In 2007, the organization operated under the business name Engineers Canada.
