Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) is an annual event designed to inspire K-12 students to learn computer science, advocate for equity, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners to the field.
During the week of December 9, 2013, CodeHS participated in the nationwide Hour of Code challenge promoted by Code.org. CodeHS was featured as a tutorial for learning JavaScript on the Computer Science Education Week website. Over the course of the week, an estimated 116,648 participants started learning to code for an hour on CodeHS. [9]
The website includes free coding lessons and other resources. The initiative also targets schools in an attempt to encourage them to include more computer science classes in the curriculum. [3] On December 9, 2013, they launched the Hour of Code nationwide to promote computer science during Computer Science Education Week through December 15, 2013.
Codeweek is a week during which free events are organized in schools, libraries, and other locations across Europe to teach more children and young people the basics of programming. In 2022, eighty European countries participated.
In many countries, there is a significant gender gap in computer science education. In 2015, 15.3% of computer science students graduating from non-doctoral granting institutions in the US were women while at doctoral granting institutions, the figure was 16.6%. Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) is a program that pairs high schools with software engineers who serve as part-time computer science teachers.. The program was started in 2009 by Microsoft software engineer Kevin Wang, but after Wang's divisional president learned about the program, Microsoft incubated the program.
As part of the Computer Science Education Week held in December 2013, Codecademy launched its first iOS app called "Hour of Code". The app focuses on the basics of programming, including the same content from the website. [27] In April 2019, Codecademy partnered with Adafruit for a course on electronics and hardware programming. [28]
A December 2014 announcement by the Obama administration showed the results of code literacy activism. It included commitments by 60 school districts, philanthropic donors, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the College Board to improve computer science education in schools. [30]
