SQL-92 was the third revision of the SQL database query language. Unlike SQL-89, it was a major revision of the standard. Aside from a few minor incompatibilities, the SQL-89 standard is forward-compatible with SQL-92. The standard specification itself grew about five times compared to SQL-89.
SQL includes operators and functions for calculating values on stored values. SQL allows the use of expressions in the select list to project data, as in the following example, which returns a list of books that cost more than 100.00 with an additional sales_tax column containing a sales tax figure calculated at 6% of the price .
SQL was initially developed at IBM by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce after learning about the relational model from Edgar F. Codd [12] in the early 1970s. [13] This version, initially called SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language), was designed to manipulate and retrieve data stored in IBM's original quasirelational database management system, System R, which a group at IBM San ...
The format dd.mm.yyyy using dots (which denote ordinal numbering) is the traditional German date format, [65] and continues to be the most commonly used. In 1996, the international format yyyy-mm-dd was made the official date format in standardized contexts such as government, education, engineering and sciences.
CREATE TABLE employees (id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY, first_name VARCHAR (50) not null, last_name VARCHAR (75) not null, mid_name VARCHAR (50) not null, dateofbirth DATE not null); Some forms of CREATE TABLE DDL may incorporate DML ( data manipulation language )-like constructs, such as the CREATE TABLE AS SELECT (CTaS) syntax of SQL.
Varchar fields can be of any size up to a limit, which varies by databases: an Oracle 11g database has a limit of 4000 bytes, [1] a MySQL 5.7 database has a limit of 65,535 bytes (for the entire row) [2] and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 has a limit of 8000 bytes (unless varchar(max) is used, which has a maximum storage capacity of 2 gigabytes). The military date notation is similar to the date notation in British English but is read cardinally (e.g. "Nineteen July") rather than ordinally (e.g. "The nineteenth of July"). [citation needed] Weeks are generally referred to by the date of some day within that week (e.g., "the week of May 25"), rather than by a week number. Many holidays ...
The time may be left out, but there is no way to define a variable that only contains the time. There is no DATETIME type. And there is a TIME type. But there is no TIMESTAMP type that can contain fine-grained timestamp up to millisecond or nanosecond. The TO_DATE function can be used to convert strings to date values. The function converts the ...
