Those who know about the MOS know that it should be yyyy-mm-dd but many of the numeric dates are not in that format all sorts of combinations are given by editors, yyyy-dd-mm, dd-mm-yyyy, mm-dd-yyyy etc. many of which are ambiguous, even yyyy-mm-dd format can be ambiguous when you are unsure if the user specified it in yyyy-dd-mm format.
