The greatest tragedy in southern rock followed the Caldwell family. Toy's youngest brother Tim died in a car crash and 30 days later middle brother Tommy (bass player and leader of MTB) died a week after a car accident. Toy and his mother died 30 days apart in 1993. Toy Sr lived into the mid 2000's.
Paul Riddle, the drummer, used to be a good friend before I moved to Texas about 20 years ago. I feel bad for the Caldwell parents as all three of their sons died young (Tommy, Toy and Tim). Back in the 80's Tim and Tommy both died in car accidents one month apart as I recall. Toy died in the 90's from drugs. Very sad.
I got into the MTB after after their Searching for a rainbow album. The life of the Caldwell boys was a tragic one. Tommy who played bass died in a car accident in 1980 at the age of 30. Toy died from a cocaine overdose in 1993. And their younger brother Tim was killed in a car accident exactly one month before Tommy.
Toy Caldwell was on fire! The Dickey Betts-lead ABB started off well but seemed to fall back into endless jams that featured Dickey's noodling. To my ears, even though Chuck Leavell was a great addition to the band, there was no one to push Dickey or keep him from going off the rails.

Only two guys from that era I've ever heard play spot on melodic fills like that. One is Toy Caldwell and the other is Jock Bartley from Firefall. Takes a great sense of timing and skill to blend those in as effortlessly as they could do. Jock still can.
