U (formerly known as UKTV Play) is a video on demand service owned by UKTV, which is operated by the BBC's commercial subsidiary BBC Studios.The service launched on 4 August 2014 and offers catch-up programming and live broadcasts from UKTV's free-to-air channels (U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W, U&Eden, and U&Yesterday).
UKTV started life as a single channel, UK Gold.The original partners behind the channel were the BBC's commercial arm BBC Enterprises and the outgoing ITV contractor Thames Television, although before the launch the American cable operator Cox Enterprises stepped in and took a majority share, 65 percent, in exchange for underwriting the costs of launching the channel.
Play UK was a music & comedy television channel broadcasting in the United Kingdom as part of the UKTV network of channels. Play UK broadcast 24/7 on digital platforms, but on the Sky Analogue platform on the Astra 19.2°E satellite system it broadcast during UK Horizons's overnight downtime of 1 am and 7 am, when UK Horizons.

In November 2023, UKTV announced that it would be rebranding their TV channels and streaming service under the new "U" masterbrand. [8] In early July 2024, UKTV started to roll out a similar logo to its "U" masterbrand. The logo can be found on the corporate website and on "U" (UKTV Play) [9] On 16 July 2024, W rebranded as U&W.
