A dermoid cyst is a teratoma of a cystic nature that contains an array of developmentally mature, solid tissues. It frequently consists of skin, hair follicles, and sweat glands, while other commonly found components include clumps of long hair, pockets of sebum, blood, fat, bone, nail, teeth, eyes, cartilage, and thyroid tissue.
Mature teratomas include dermoid cysts and are generally benign. [8] Immature teratomas may be cancerous. [4] [9] Most ovarian teratomas are mature. [10] In adults, testicular teratomas are generally cancerous. [11] Definitive diagnosis is based on a tissue biopsy. [2] Treatment of coccyx, testicular, and ovarian teratomas is generally by surgery.
A pilonidal cyst can resemble a dermoid cyst, a kind of teratoma (germ cell tumor). In particular, a pilonidal cyst in the gluteal cleft can resemble a sacrococcygeal teratoma. Correct diagnosis is important because all teratomas require consultation with an oncologist and complete surgical excision, if possible without any spillage.
The vertical mattress stitch is most commonly used in anatomic locations which tend to invert, such as the posterior aspect of the neck, and sites of greater skin laxity such as the closure of lax skin after removing a dermoid cyst or reduced subcutaneous tissue (e.g., the shin) that do not provide adequate subcutaneous tissue for dermal closure. [6]
[6] [9] Surgical removal of the mass is the definitive treatment for ectopic thymus tissue that is causing symptoms. [4] It has been reported that the ectopic thymus tissue can transform into cancerous tissue. [4] However, due to most diagnosed ectopic thymus tissue being resected due to this concern, the natural progression is not well explored.

A thyroglossal duct cyst may rupture unexpectedly, resulting in a draining sinus known as a thyroglossal fistula. [2] Thyroglossal fistula can develop when the removal of the cyst has not been fully completed. This is usually noticed when bleeding in the neck occurs, causing swelling and fluid ejection around the original wound of removal. [5]
Robert Battey (November 26, 1828 - November 8, 1895) was an American physician who is known for pioneering a surgical procedure then called Battey's Operation and now termed radical oophorectomy (or removal of a woman's ovaries).
