The 3rd Marine Division is a division of the United States Marine Corps based at Camp Courtney, Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan.It is one of three active duty infantry divisions in the Marine Corps and together with the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1stMAW) and the 3rd Marine Logistics Group (3rd MLG) forms the III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF).

3rd Battalion, 12th Marines (3/12) is an artillery battalion comprising four firing batteries and a Headquarters Battery. The firing batteries are not permanently assigned to the battalion- they are all on 6-month rotations in Okinawa from the 10th Marine Regiment and the 11th Marine Regiment (known as the Unit Deployment Program (UDP)).
In January 1952, the regiment was reassigned to the 3d Marine Division. The Division went to Japan in August 1953 and 3d Marines set up its headquarters at Camp Fuji-McNair . Durings its stay in Japan, the Regiment conducted many field and landing exercises. 3d Marines was relocated to Camp Sukiran , Okinawa in March 1957.
During the recapture of Guam, the 3rd Marine Division and the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade each had its own reconnaissance company. Major General Lemuel C. Shepherd split the 3rd Division's scout and sniper company into its three platoons to attach each to the brigade's regiments, the 4th and 22nd. [1]
On June 1, 2006, 1/3 handed over their area of operations to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment and shortly thereafter returned to Hawaii. [ 5 ] In March 2007, 1st Battalion 3d Marines deployed to Haditha, Iraq . 1/3 lost no Marines during this deployment, which was a first for the Marine Corps since the start of OIF .

They were again reassigned in April 1971 to the 1st Marine Division. The battalion was deactivated 1 June 1974. [2] 3rd Battalion 3rd Marines was reactivated on 1 October 1975 at MCB Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, and assigned to the 3rd Marine Division. Elements of the battalion deployed to the Western Pacific at various times during the 1970s and 1980s.
